At Minds Capital we invest the same amount of equity into each deal.
Why?
(1) It eliminates emotion. When evaluating a deal from a sponsor, we don't need to think about how much to invest ("oh, this is pretty cool but feels risky, so just a small check" or "wow, this is amazing, let's go all-in"). Instead, it's a binary decision: invest or not.
(2) It provides 100% equal-weighted diversification across our portfolio.
