I recently attended an offsite with ~25 other independent sponsors, hosted by Lang Partners Family Office. It was amazing for networking. Here are three things I observed:
(1) It isn't luck. This profession requires skill and perseverance, and success comes through diligently processing a high volume of opportunities and theses. Trial & error, learn by doing, repeatedly put yourself in situations where you can score.
(2) Differentiation. Most sponsors think they're good at articulating how they stand out, but we could all do a better job here. Some aren't really differentiated, and most of those who are don't advertise it as well as they should.
(3) Social intelligence. Independent sponsors are visionaries who constantly pitch bankers, business owners, investors, and employees. They are entrepreneurs and salespeople. Hard to imagine a better group for socialization & networking.
